Pulmonary Fibrosis / ILD

Pulmonary fibrosis, also known as interstitial lung disease (ILD), is a chronic and irreversible lung condition that causes scarring and thickening of the lung tissue.

While treatments can help manage symptoms of ILD, there is currently no cure

Pulmonary fibrosis, also known as interstitial lung disease (ILD), is a chronic and progressive lung condition characterized by the formation of scar tissue (fibrosis) in the lungs. This scarring thickens and stiffens the lung tissue, making it harder for oxygen to pass through the walls of the air sacs and into the bloodstream.

Our team of experienced healthcare professionals is dedicated to helping you overcome your symptoms and regain your health.

Symptoms

Pulmonary fibrosis or interstitial lung disease (ILD) can cause a range of symptoms. These symptoms can vary from person to person and may develop slowly over time.

  1. Shortness of breath, especially during physical activity
  2. Dry, persistent cough
  3. Fatigue and weakness
  4. Chest discomfort or tightness
  5. Rapid, shallow breathing
Other less common symptoms may include weight loss, joint and muscle pain, and clubbing of the fingers or toes.
Diagnosis

How diagnosis is made?

Early diagnosis is crucial for managing pulmonary fibrosis/ILD and preventing further damage to the lungs.

The diagnosis is made based on the patient's medical history, physical exam, and test results.

Physical exam

A doctor will listen to your lungs and look for signs of clubbing in your fingers.

Pulmonary Function Test

These tests measure how much air your lungs can hold, how quickly you can exhale, and how well your lungs are oxygenating your blood.

Imaging Tests

Chest X-ray/CT scan can help to diagnose the cause of respiratory symptoms and detect abnormalities in the lungs, heart, or lymph nodes.

Blood tests

A blood test can detect the presence of antibodies that can attack the lungs and cause scarring.

Biopsy

In some cases, a sample of pleural tissue may be taken for further analysis and diagnosis.

Treatment

Get the treatment done right!

Treatment for pulmonary fibrosis/ILD is aimed at slowing or stopping the scarring process and improving lung function. Lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking and avoiding exposure to lung irritants can also be beneficial.

Medications

Prescription drugs to slow down the progression of the disease and manage symptoms.

Oxygen therapy

Using supplemental oxygen can help relieve shortness of breath and improve oxygen levels in the blood.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

This program includes exercise, breathing techniques, and education to manage symptoms and improve lung function.

Lung transplant

A surgical procedure to replace damaged lungs with healthy ones from a donor, in severe cases of pulmonary fibrosis/ILD.
